Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with an early morning departure from Arusha in a private 4×4 vehicle. The scenic drive of approximately three hours takes you west through the fertile highlands of Arusha Region, passing through small market towns and local farms before the unmistakable silhouette of Kilimanjaro begins to dominate the horizon. You'll arrive at Londorossi Gate (2,100m) for registration, park fee payment, and a pre-climb briefing with your lead guide.
After completing formalities, the vehicle transfers you to the Lemosho Forest Trailhead (2,100m). The first walk — a gentle 3–4 hour trek of approximately 8 km through magnificent montane rainforest — leads you to Mti Mkubwa (the "Big Tree") camp. This first forest section is one of Kilimanjaro's most enchanting environments. Enormous prehistoric-looking trees drip with moss and lichen, shafts of afternoon light pierce the canopy, and the air is alive with the calls of Hartlaub's turacos and the crashing of unseen colobus monkeys overhead.
Mti Mkubwa Camp sits in a small clearing in the forest at 2,650m — a magical first night camp with the sounds of the jungle all around. Your team will have erected tents, set up the cook tent, and prepared a hot welcome meal.
