The Serengeti’s Mara area transforms into an unrivalled wildlife paradise during this season, with lion prides of up to 30 strong and predators patrolling every horizon.

Depending on your arrival time, you will be treated to a hot lunch at the lodge. The afternoon is yours to unwind, freshen up, and take a short stroll around the vibrant city of Arusha — the safari capital of East Africa. Soak in the local colour, visit the nearby market, or simply relax in the beautiful lodge gardens as the excitement of your upcoming adventure builds.

DAY TWO

Arusha → Tarangire National Park

After a hearty breakfast, your safari officially launches as you head southwest from Arusha into the vast wilderness of Tarangire National Park. The drive winds through Tanzania's highlands, passing through small villages and open agricultural land before the landscape transforms dramatically into the iconic Acacia woodland and swelling Baobab forests that define this remarkable park.

The park runs along the famous Tarangire River, which lies at the heart of the Great Rift Valley floor. During the dry season, the river becomes a magnet for wildlife — drawing enormous herds of elephants, buffalo, and other species from across the surrounding savannah. Tarangire is reputed to contain some of the largest elephant herds in Africa, and encounters with groups of 200 or more are not uncommon.

As you explore on a full afternoon game drive, keep your eyes open for three rare and elusive species found here: the Greater Kudu, the Fringed-eared Oryx, and the striking Ashy Starling — found only in this region of northern Tanzania. The park also supports impressive populations of lions, leopards, cheetahs, and huge herds of wildebeest and zebra.

DAY THREE

Tarangire → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After an early breakfast, you depart Tarangire and head east toward one of Africa's most breathtaking destinations — the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive ascends dramatically through dense highland forest and Maasai grazing lands before reaching the crater rim at over 2,400 metres above sea level, where sweeping views into the ancient caldera take your breath away.

You will descend 600 metres into this magnificent crater for a half-day game drive on the crater floor. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most densely populated wildlife areas in the world, home to an estimated 30,000 large animals within its 260 km² floor. Massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and eland graze the open grasslands; hippos wallow in the Mandusi Swamp; giant African elephants roam the Lerai Forest; and Tanzania's last surviving black rhino can sometimes be spotted in the distance.

Enjoy a scenic picnic lunch on the crater floor — a true safari highlight — before ascending back to the rim for a comfortable overnight stay at the highland lodge, where cool mountain air and spectacular crater-edge views round off an extraordinary day.

DAY FOUR

Ngorongoro → Serengeti National Park (Central)

This morning, after breakfast at the highland lodge, you continue westward through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and cross into the legendary Serengeti National Park — Tanzania's largest and most famous protected area. As you descend from the Ngorongoro highlands, the landscape opens with a sudden, almost cinematic sweep: infinite golden grasslands, scattered kopjes, and acacia-dotted plains stretching all the way to the horizon.

The Serengeti is home to the world's densest concentration of large predators. As you enter the park, afternoon game drives begin in earnest. The central Serengeti — also known as the Seronera Valley — is year-round prime territory, dissected by two rivers whose banks draw a remarkable concentration of wildlife. Lions are virtually guaranteed here; leopards drape themselves lazily across the sausage trees lining the Seronera River; and cheetahs sprint across the open plains in pursuit of Thomson's gazelle.

With a packed lunch enjoyed at a scenic viewpoint, you make the most of the long afternoon light before settling into your tented camp as dusk paints the Serengeti in shades of amber and gold.

DAY FIVE

Serengeti Central → Serengeti North (Mara Area)

Today you journey northward — deeper into the Serengeti — toward the legendary Mara area, the epicentre of the Great Wildebeest Migration and arguably the most thrilling wildlife destination on Earth between August and October. The drive itself is a game drive, passing through the Lobo Corridor and increasingly dramatic, tree-dotted plains with sightings at every turn.

As you arrive in the northern Serengeti, the landscape shifts. Kopje-studded hills rise above wide, grassy valleys; the Mara River winds through dense riverine woodland; and the atmosphere buzzes with the unmistakable energy of a place where something extraordinary could happen at any moment. Resident wildlife numbers are exceptionally high year-round — large lion prides, leopards, hyenas, and vast herds of topi and impala call this area home.

In the afternoon, your guide will begin positioning near the Mara River crossings — monitoring herd movements and assessing where the wildebeest may be building up. Even the anticipation is thrilling. End the day with a spectacular northern Serengeti sunset from your tented camp at the edge of the wilderness.

DAY SIX

Full Day – Serengeti North (Mara River Crossings)

Today is dedicated entirely to the Great Wildebeest Migration — a full day in the northern Serengeti's Mara area, one of the most electrifying days of the entire safari. You leave camp at first light, following the wildebeest herds as they move toward the Mara River under the guidance of your experienced game tracker.

The dramatic Mara River crossings are the centrepiece of the migration experience. Herds of thousands mass nervously on the southern bank, sometimes for hours, working up the collective nerve to plunge into the river below, where giant Nile crocodiles patrol the murky water in anticipation. When the lead animal finally commits, the entire herd erupts into a spectacular, thundering chaos of leaping, splashing bodies. It is one of the most breathtaking scenes in the natural world. Please note that crossing sightings depend on timing and herd behaviour — your guide will use every skill and local knowledge to maximise your chances.

Beyond the crossings, the Mara area delivers extraordinary game viewing throughout the day: lion prides of up to 30 individuals, cheetahs hunting on the open plains, massive buffalo herds, and birding that rivals anywhere in Africa. A packed picnic lunch is enjoyed in the field, keeping you out among the wildlife all day long.

DAY SEVEN

Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Karatu

After one final sunrise breakfast overlooking the Serengeti plains, you begin your return journey eastward — carrying with you memories that will last a lifetime. The drive takes you back through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the highland forest and crater rim views offer one last glimpse of this extraordinary landscape before descending toward the fertile agricultural highlands of Karatu.

A packed lunch accompanies you on the road, allowing you to pause at scenic viewpoints and soak in the changing landscape as the savannah gives way to highland forest and farmland. The pace today is relaxed and reflective — a chance to process the extraordinary wildlife encounters of the past days and to look back at the vast wilderness you've had the privilege of exploring.

You arrive at Farm of Dreams Lodge in Karatu in the late afternoon — a beautifully situated highland lodge surrounded by coffee farms and forest, with a warm, intimate atmosphere that provides the perfect setting for your final night in the bush.

Karatu → Kilimanjaro International Airport (Departure)

Your final morning in Tanzania begins with a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, giving you the chance to say goodbye to the incredible landscapes that have surrounded you throughout this adventure. Gather your memories, your photographs, and your stories — Tanzania has a way of claiming a permanent place in the hearts of all who visit.

After breakfast, your driver will transfer you directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight home — or, if you've arranged it, onwards to the pristine white beaches of Zanzibar for a perfect post-safari beach extension.

This has been an extraordinary journey through some of Africa's most magnificent wilderness. You leave with not just photographs and memories, but a deeply renewed connection to the natural world — and, we hope, the first seed of a desire to return.

“We did the Premium Explorer package and it was absolutely worth every penny. The tented camps in the northern Serengeti were phenomenal — falling asleep to lions calling outside the tent. “Wildflip organised everything flawlessly — from the Kilimanjaro airport pick-up to the final drop-off. Eight days felt like both a lifetime and not enough. The combination of Tarangire’s baobabs and elephants, the Serengeti migration, and the Ngorongoro rhino sighting is the perfect Tanzania circuit. Already planning a return.”
