Tanzania's Iconic Northern Circuit — Six Days of Wonder

This extraordinary 6-day safari starts in Arusha and takes you on a comprehensive journey through Tanzania’s most celebrated wildlife destinations — the magnificent baobab country of Tarangire National Park, the boundless golden plains of the Serengeti, and the awe-inspiring natural wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater — the 8th wonder of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is Tanzania’s northern circuit at its finest: a seamless progression through three of the most wildlife-rich ecosystems on the African continent, each utterly different in character and each extraordinary in the wildlife encounters it delivers. You will witness the Great Annual Migration of wildebeest — the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth — and have the rare privilege of descending 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater, a natural enclosure that shelters over 30,000 animals including Tanzania’s critically endangered black rhino.

With Wildflip Safaris, every detail is managed by experts who know these parks intimately — where the lions are hunting this week, which kopje the cheetahs favour at this time of year, and precisely where to position you for the most extraordinary game-viewing experience possible. This safari will give you the best Tanzania has to offer.

Tarangire National Park is home to some of the largest elephant herds in all of Africa — enormous extended family groups converging on the Tarangire River in a spectacular display of wildlife abundance.

The Great Migration

The Serengeti hosts the world's greatest wildlife spectacle — over 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra in a continuous circular migration across the endless golden plains.

Ngorongoro Crater

Descend 600 metres into the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a natural enclosure sheltering 30,000 animals, including Tanzania's last remaining black rhinos.

Serengeti Predator Action

The Serengeti supports Africa's highest concentration of lions, alongside cheetah, leopard, hyena, and wild dog — delivering the continent's finest predator viewing year-round.

Ancient Baobab Landscape

Tarangire's iconic giant African baobab trees — some thousands of years old — create a dramatic, otherworldly backdrop that is unlike any other park in Tanzania.

DAY ONE

Arrival in Arusha — Kilimanjaro International Airport

Your Tanzania adventure begins the moment you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your dedicated Wildflip Safaris driver will be waiting at arrivals — smartly dressed, holding your name card, ready to give you a warm Tanzanian welcome with a heartfelt "Karibu sana" — "Welcome greatly." The transfer from KIA to Arusha takes approximately 45 minutes along roads that already begin to hint at the extraordinary natural world you are about to enter: the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro occasionally visible in the distance, the roadside acacia trees alive with weaverbirds, the wide open Tanzanian sky stretching overhead.

Arrive at Amani Safari Lodge — a beautifully positioned lodge offering a comfortable and authentic introduction to the Arusha experience. Depending on your arrival time, a hot lunch will be ready for you, prepared from fresh local ingredients and served in the lodge's welcoming atmosphere. After lunch, the afternoon is yours to begin acclimatising to the warmth, the colours, and the distinctive pace of East African life. Take a short walk around the city — Arusha is a vibrant, fascinating place, the safari capital of Tanzania, where Maasai elders in red shukas share the pavements with students, traders, and safari guides from across the world.

Return to the lodge before sunset for a pre-safari briefing from your Wildflip guide, who will walk you through the days ahead — the parks, the wildlife, the best strategies for each game drive, and what to expect in terms of timing, terrain, and the particular wildlife riches of the season you are entering. Then, dinner at the lodge and a good night's sleep — tomorrow, the safari begins in earnest.

DAY TWO

Arusha → Tarangire National Park

After breakfast at the lodge, you depart Arusha and head south-west toward Tarangire National Park — a two-hour drive through the fertile farmland of the Arusha region that soon opens into the distinctive savannah and woodland landscape of the Rift Valley approaches. As the road descends and the vegetation shifts, the baobab trees begin — first singly, then in increasing abundance, until the landscape around the park entrance is dominated by these extraordinary ancient giants, their vast silver trunks rising from the red earth like the columns of a natural cathedral.

Tarangire is one of Tanzania's most underrated and rewarding parks. The park runs along the line of the Tarangire River — a permanent water source in an otherwise seasonally dry landscape, which acts like a magnet for wildlife during the dry season. The park's natural vegetation of Acacia woodland, giant baobabs, and vast swamp areas in the south creates a remarkable diversity of habitats, and the wildlife that gathers to exploit these resources is extraordinary in both variety and number.

Tarangire is perhaps most famous for containing some of the largest elephant herds in Africa — enormous extended family groups of 50, 80, even a hundred individuals, converging on the river and its tributaries in a spectacular and deeply moving display. But the park offers far more: the rare Greater Kudu and Fringed-eared Oryx, species seldom seen in other northern circuit parks, are resident here. The birdlife is exceptional — the iconic Ashy Starling (endemic to central Tanzania) can be found here along with hundreds of other species, from giant ground hornbills to lilac-breasted rollers blazing across the acacia canopy. A full afternoon game drive takes you deep into the park's best circuits before the drive to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

DAY THREE

Tarangire → Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you set out on the longer drive to Serengeti National Park — one of the great wildlife journeys in Africa in its own right. The route passes through the town of Karatu and climbs to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater before descending again on the western side and entering the extraordinary landscape of the Serengeti ecosystem. The name itself — from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning "endless plains" — perfectly captures what greets you as the road crosses into the park: grassland stretching to an utterly flat horizon in every direction, broken only by kopjes and the occasional acacia, under a sky that seems wider and deeper than anywhere else on earth.

A picnic lunch prepared by the camp team is enjoyed in the field — your vehicle pulled up in the shade of a solitary tree, wildebeest moving across the mid-distance, the silence of the Serengeti broken only by the wind and the distant calls of birds. After lunch, an afternoon game drive penetrates the park's game-rich circuits: the central Seronera valley, the Serengeti's year-round wildlife hub, where the resident river keeps the vegetation green and the predators concentrated. Wildebeest and zebra move across the plains in their immense herds, gazelles bound away from the vehicle in graceful arcs, and somewhere ahead — your guide scanning the horizon with practiced eyes — the migration is building, the greatest wildlife show on earth beginning to make itself known.

DAY FOUR

Full Day in the Heart of the Serengeti

Today is one of the most anticipated days of any Tanzania safari — a full day devoted entirely to the Serengeti, rising early to make the most of every golden hour. Your expert Wildflip guide has spent the previous afternoon scouting game movements and gathering intelligence from the guide network about predator locations, the current state of the migration, and the most productive game-viewing areas for today's drives.

The morning begins at first light — the most productive time in the Serengeti. Predators from the night's hunt may still be feeding; cheetahs are moving across the open grass before the heat of the day forces them to rest; and the enormous Hippo Pool — one of the Serengeti's most famous and reliably rewarding viewing points — comes alive as the hippos begin their morning rituals in the cool water, the Nile crocodiles basking motionlessly on the banks just metres away.

Depending on the season and the guide's intelligence, the day may take you to the centre of the migration itself — sometimes surrounded by wildebeest stretching beyond sight in every direction, sometimes by zebras which travel with the wildebeest, the two species providing complementary grazing strategies that benefit both herds. Then the drama: the predators that shadow the migration at every step — a coalition of lions making a coordinated rush at a struggling wildebeest, a hyena clan working the margins, a cheetah mother teaching cubs to hunt in the long grass.

In the afternoon, the drive moves to the kopjes — the volcanic rocky outcrops that rise from the plains like scattered boulders and provide protection, shade, and shelter for a remarkable variety of wildlife. From the top of a kopje, your guide points out the vast grasslands of the Serengeti stretching away to every horizon — a view that makes the scale of this wilderness genuinely staggering. Elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions — all visible in a single panorama. And if the luck of the Serengeti favours you today, the elusive leopard draped in an acacia, or the cheetah crouched in the golden grass, ready to accelerate into its legendary sprint.

DAY FIVE

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The final morning of your safari arrives with a last extraordinary sunrise over the Ngorongoro highlands — the kind of morning that brings everything into perspective. After a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, your guide transfers you back to Arusha, arriving in time for your onward flight.

The drive back is unhurried — a chance to absorb the landscapes you've passed through, to look through your photographs, to relive the moments that surprised you most. The Tarangire elephants moving beneath the baobabs. The Serengeti lions watching from the kopje rocks. The first view of the crater from the rim, and everything living inside it. These are the memories that stay. Not just for days or months — but for a lifetime.

Five days is the perfect duration for Tanzania's northern circuit. Long enough to settle into each place, to move through the parks at a pace that allows genuine connection with the wildlife — not just a checklist of sightings. You'll leave Arusha with more than photographs. You'll leave with a feeling you did not know was possible. And you will almost certainly already be planning your return.

DAY SIX

Ngorongoro → Kilimanjaro International Airport

The final morning of the safari arrives with particular weight — the knowledge that you are leaving a landscape that has changed the way you see the world. After a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, take a last look across the crater highlands as the morning light transforms the forest and the mist begins to lift. The sounds of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — the calls of hornbills, the distant bark of a baboon troupe, the wind through the highland forest — are with you until the moment you step into the vehicle for the drive back to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

The road passes through Karatu, through the coffee and wheat farms of the highlands, and down through the increasingly familiar landscape of the Arusha approaches. The drive takes approximately 3–4 hours depending on traffic and airport timing. En route, your guide will summarise the extraordinary moments of the six days past — the encounters, the landscapes, the quiet hours and the dramatic ones — and encourage you to share your impressions, your photographs, and your plans to return.

At Kilimanjaro Airport, your Wildflip driver assists with check-in procedures before the final, slightly reluctant farewell. You depart Tanzania carrying far more than photographs. You carry stories of the Tarangire elephants at dusk, the Serengeti migration surrounding your vehicle, and the black rhino silhouetted against the crater lake. You carry a connection to this extraordinary country that will stay with you, and that will bring you back.

What Our Northern Circuit Travellers Say

★★★★★

“Five days felt like exactly the right amount of time. Tarangire blew us away before we even reached the Serengeti — elephant herds literally surrounding our vehicle under baobab trees. Then the Serengeti just kept delivering — we had three lion sightings in one afternoon. The Ngorongoro Crater was the perfect finale. Wildflip’s guide was superb from start to finish.”

Emma & James — United Kingdom· April 2026

★★★★★

“We did the Premium Explorer tier and it was absolutely the right decision. The private vehicle changed everything — complete flexibility, no rushing, no compromise. We watched a cheetah hunt on the Sogore Circuit for nearly an hour. The balloon sunrise over the Serengeti the next morning was perhaps the single greatest experience of my life. Flawlessly organised by Wildflip.”

Lars F. — Sweden· March 2026

★★★★★

“I came for the migration and I wasn’t disappointed — but what surprised me was how much I loved Tarangire. Nobody told me it would be that extraordinary. The Greater Kudu sighting alone was worth the flight to Tanzania. Add the Ngorongoro Crater and the rhino we spotted at dusk, and this was the trip of a lifetime. Already talking about coming back for the southern circuit.”
