A Journey Into Untamed Africa

Step into one of Africa’s last true wildernesses — Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve and still widely called Selous among safari enthusiasts. Far from the crowds of the northern circuit, this hidden gem offers raw, untouched beauty where rivers wind through golden plains and wildlife roams freely without boundaries, across the largest protected area in Africa.

This is not just a safari — it’s a deeply immersive experience. You’ll walk where elephants wander, glide silently past crocodiles on ancient waterways, and fall asleep under a sky filled with a million stars. The legendary Rufiji River — Africa’s largest river system south of the Congo — forms the beating heart of Nyerere, sustaining an extraordinary diversity of wildlife: from Africa’s largest elephant population and the continent’s most significant wild dog packs to hippos, lions, leopards, and the rare Roosevelt sable antelope.

With Wildflip Safaris, every moment here feels personal, wild, and unforgettable. Our expert guides unlock the secrets of this extraordinary wilderness through walking safaris, boat safaris, game drives, and tree-hide wildlife watching — experiences unavailable in Tanzania’s more visited northern parks.

Trip Highlights

What Makes This Safari Extraordinary

Africa's Wild Dogs

Nyerere supports one of the largest populations of endangered African wild dogs on the continent — one of the rarest and most thrilling sightings in all of Africa.

Boat Safari on the Rufiji

Glide silently across Lake Tagalala on a boat safari — past basking crocodiles, wallowing hippos, and the spectacular African skimmer — a safari experience unique to Nyerere.

Guided Walking Safari

Step quietly through woodland and riverine forest with an armed expert guide — learning to read the bush through footprints, sounds, and signs invisible from a vehicle.

Massive Elephant Herds

The northwestern plains harbour some of Tanzania's largest elephant concentrations — hundreds of individuals moving together across the open savannah in awe-inspiring formations.

Tree-Hide Waterhole Watch

Climb into a camouflaged tree-house hide at Sable Mountain and watch in silence as animals gather at a waterhole — one of the most intimate wildlife experiences anywhere in Africa.

Zero Crowds · Pure Wilderness

Unlike the busy northern circuit, Nyerere's vast wilderness means game drives in near-total solitude — just you, your guide, and the wild heart of untouched Africa.

What Our Travellers Say

★★★★★

“The Selous completely changed my understanding of what a safari could be. No crowds, no convoy of vehicles — just us, our extraordinary guide Samuel, and the wild. The boat safari on Lake Tagalala was unlike anything I’ve done in years of African travel. Massive crocs, pods of hippos, the most stunning birds — and then the tree-hide at sunset watching elephants drinking right below us. Wildflip’s organisation was absolutely seamless. This is the real Africa.”

★★★★★

“We specifically chose Nyerere for the wild dogs and we were not disappointed — on Day 2 we found a pack of 14 preparing for an evening hunt and watched for nearly two hours. Completely breathtaking. The walking safari was revelatory — our guide Rashid taught us to see the bush in a way no game drive ever could. Jimbiza Camp was wonderfully positioned and the food was outstanding. Do not miss this park.”

★★★★★

“Four days wasn’t nearly enough. From the moment we stepped off the plane at Mtemere to the tearful farewell at the airstrip, every moment was rich and real and utterly alive. The Selous doesn’t give you a performance — it gives you the actual wilderness. Wildflip handled every detail perfectly and their guide’s knowledge of the ecosystem was extraordinary. The boat safari picnic breakfast on Lake Tagalala was one of the great moments of my life.”
