DAY ONE

Arrival in Tanzania — Kilimanjaro International Airport

Your Tanzanian adventure begins the moment you touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your dedicated Wildflip Safaris driver will be waiting to welcome you and transfer you to the charming Moshono Hillside Hotel in Arusha. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a hot lunch at the hotel and then take a gentle stroll through the city to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of this safari gateway town.

Return to the hotel in the evening for a leisurely dinner as you begin to settle into the unhurried rhythms of East Africa. The excitement of the days ahead awaits.

DAY TWO

Arusha → Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your guide collects you for the drive to Tarangire National Park — one of Africa's most underrated wildlife destinations and a spectacular start to your safari. The park runs along the Tarangire River in the Great Rift Valley, dominated by low-lying hills, sweeping Acacia woodland, and the iconic giant Baobab trees that have stood sentinel here for thousands of years.

Both the river and the vast southern swamps act as a magnet for wildlife during Tanzania's dry season, but even during the calving season months, Tarangire dazzles. The park is famed for containing some of Africa's largest elephant herds — and spotting them gathered at the river is a soul-stirring sight. Tarangire is also home to three rare and special species: the Greater Kudu, the Fringe-eared Oryx, and the endemic Ashy Starling found nowhere else on earth.

DAY THREE

Karatu → Ndutu, Ngorongoro Conservation Area — Arrival & First Game Drive

After a hearty breakfast at the Farm of Dreams Lodge, your guide drives you through the dramatic landscapes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area as the terrain transitions from highland forests and coffee farms to the wide, open grasslands of the southern Serengeti ecosystem. The sense of anticipation builds as the first scattered herds of wildebeest and zebra begin to appear on the horizon.

On arrival at Ndutu, lose no time — begin your first afternoon game drive across the sweeping short-grass plains. This is your introduction to one of nature's greatest spectacles: the wildebeest calving season. From mid-January through February, calves are born at an extraordinary rate — up to 8,000 per day at peak — and the plains are alive with the chaos of new life. Predators are never far away. A picnic lunch is enjoyed on the open plains under the vast Tanzanian sky.

DAY FOUR

Full Day in Ndutu — Deep into the Calving Plains

Rise before dawn for the finest game-viewing light of the day. This is your deepest immersion into the calving season — a full day devoted entirely to the drama unfolding across Ndutu's golden plains. Your guide will track the herds patiently, navigating to wherever the action is most intense. Expect extraordinary predator-prey encounters: cheetah coalitions sprinting after young calves, lion prides working the margins of the herd, and spotted hyena clans lurking at a respectful distance.

The afternoon takes you to the shores of Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek — twin lakes that provide permanent water sources, drawing wildlife in extraordinary concentrations. The woodland fringing these lakes is a haven for leopard and a treasure trove for birdwatchers, with over 500 species recorded in the broader ecosystem. As the sun dips low and the golden hour sets the plains ablaze, the day's highlights will feel almost impossible to recount.

DAY FIVE

Full Day in Ndutu — Big Cats & the Six-Species Search

Your third and final full day in Ndutu is dedicated to completing the remarkable six big cat species that call this ecosystem home: lion, leopard, cheetah, caracal, serval, and African wildcat. Few places on earth offer even the possibility of encountering all six within a single area — Ndutu is one of them. Your guide's intimate knowledge of the terrain and animal behaviour puts you in the best possible position to find each one.

The morning game drive ventures into the Ndutu woodland — prime leopard territory — where the dappled acacia canopy hides one of Africa's most secretive big cats. The open plains beyond offer the best chance of spotting the smaller and more cryptic cats: caracal hunting among the rocky outcrops, and serval slinking through the long grass. By afternoon, return to the calving herds for one last spectacular chapter of this extraordinary wildlife story before departing Ndutu the following morning.

DAY SIX

Ndutu → Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you make the scenic crossing into the core of the Serengeti National Park — the name means "endless plains" in Maasai, and standing amid its vast expanse, you will understand why. The Serengeti is one of the oldest and most ecologically diverse ecosystems on earth, and the site of the largest mammal migration in the world.

A picnic lunch is enjoyed en route as your guide navigates towards the best game-viewing areas, tracking immense herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras sweeping across the plains — followed at a respectful distance by lions, leopards, and hyenas. The afternoon game drive continues into the golden hours before you settle into your tented camp as the sounds of the African night envelop the camp.

DAY SEVEN

Full Day in Serengeti National Park

Rise before dawn for one of the most rewarding days of the entire safari. A full day in the Serengeti gives your guide the time and freedom to track the best sightings, following the herds and the predators who shadow them. Begin at the Hippo Pool — watching hippos and crocodiles share the water in a prehistoric display of coexistence — before venturing out across the open plains.

Your guide will navigate you to the kopjes — the ancient volcanic rocky outcrops that rise dramatically from the grass sea and serve as territorial headquarters for lion prides, leopard lairs, and cheetah spotting platforms. From the top, you'll gaze out across the Serengeti's vast expanse — an unforgettable vista.

This diverse landscape ensures exceptional game viewing: elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and if fortune smiles, the elusive leopard and cheetah — plus a remarkable wealth of birdlife from elegant Secretary Birds to the flightless Ostrich.

DAY EIGHT

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

Today the adventure turns south to one of Africa's — and the world's — most celebrated natural wonders: the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former 7 Wonders of the World nominee. After a 6-hour drive of approximately 180 km, you descend 600 metres into this magnificent caldera for a half-day game drive.

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most densely populated wildlife areas in Africa, home to an estimated 30,000 animals within its 260 km² floor — including some of Tanzania's last remaining black rhino. Year-round water and abundant fodder support vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, elands, warthogs, hippos, and enormous African elephants. The concentration of predators here is extraordinary: lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the ever-elusive leopard. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the crater floor surrounded by wildlife.

DAY NINE

Karatu → Lake Eyasi Tribal Experience → Karatu

After breakfast, your day takes a profoundly different and deeply memorable turn as you travel to Lake Eyasi — a picturesque and remote lake formed by the Great Rift Valley. The lake shore is home to two remarkable tribes who live in entirely different ways, offering a window into ways of life that have changed little for thousands of years.

The Hadzabe are one of the world's last true hunter-gatherer peoples. In the past, nomadic wanderers have gradually settled in this remote region while retaining an extraordinarily high level of wilderness survival skills. Their archery is legendary — a finely honed skill that puts food on the table daily. You will have the extraordinary opportunity to go hunting with the tribe, accompanying them through the bush with bows and arrows in hand.

The neighbouring Datooga tribe provides a striking contrast: a pastoral people who were driven to Lake Eyasi by better-armed tribes and who have since devoted themselves to cattle-breeding and farming. Both tribes have been preserved in a remarkably authentic state by their remote location — far from the developing world — offering visitors a rare and humbling glimpse into primal African life.

DAY 10

Karatu → Cultural Tour, Mto wa Mbu & Makuyuni Wildlife Park

Today combines two contrasting but equally rewarding experiences. After breakfast, your first stop is Makuyuni Wildlife Park — a beautiful and refreshingly uncrowded destination set amid Tanzania's stunning landscapes. Unlike the famous northern circuit parks, Makuyuni offers a more intimate wildlife encounter, where lions, elephants, giraffes, and zebras roam their natural habitats in near-solitude. The park's diverse scenery — vast open spaces, forests, and rolling hills — makes it perfect for walking safaris and close-up exploration.

The afternoon brings the vibrant energy of Mto wa Mbu (meaning "River of Mosquitoes" in Swahili) — one of Tanzania's most culturally diverse villages, home to people from over 120 different tribal groups. A guided cultural walk introduces you to local rice farms, banana plantations, and the extraordinary daily life of this melting-pot community, offering a rich and authentic connection to everyday Tanzanian culture before your return to Arusha.

DAY 11

Leisure Day in Arusha — Depart at Your Pace

Your final full day in Tanzania is yours to savour. Sleep in, enjoy a long breakfast, and spend the morning at leisure — perhaps browsing the colourful stalls of the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre, picking up hand-crafted souvenirs and Tingatinga artwork to take home. The city's coffee shops and restaurants offer a chance to reflect on 12 extraordinary days in the wild.

If energy permits, your guide can arrange an optional visit to a local Maasai community near Arusha, or a visit to the Arusha National Park for a gentle half-day game walk among flamingos and black-and-white colobus monkeys. In the evening, a farewell dinner celebrates your unforgettable Tanzanian adventure.

Arusha → Kilimanjaro International Airport — Departure

After a final delicious breakfast, your Wildflip Safaris driver will provide comfortable transportation to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward connection. The memories of 12 extraordinary days will travel with you — the thunder of wildebeest hooves, the golden eyes of a lion at dawn, the laughter of Hadzabe hunters, and the silent immensity of the Serengeti sky.

You will return home with more than photographs — you will carry the spirit of Tanzania in your heart, and stories to share for a lifetime. We hope to welcome you back for your next adventure.

What Our Travellers Say

“Witnessing the calving at Ndutu was beyond anything I’d imagined. Hundreds of newborn wildebeest surrounded by cheetah and lions — it was pure wildlife theatre every single day. The three nights at Kon Tiki were magical, and our guide was extraordinarily knowledgeable. 12 days was absolutely the right length.”

“The Hadzabe experience at Lake Eyasi completely blew me away — it wasn’t touristy at all. We genuinely went out hunting in the bush with them at dawn. Combined with the calving, the Serengeti full day, and the Ngorongoro descent — this was the trip of a lifetime. Every single day was different and extraordinary.”

“I have been on safaris before but nothing compared to this. The sheer quantity and quality of wildlife encounters over 12 days in the calving season was staggering. Wildflip’s organisation was flawless — not a single hiccup. The Farm of Dreams Lodge near Karatu was a beautiful surprise too.”
