Seven Days in the Footsteps of Africa's Great Migration

This unforgettable 7-day safari is designed around one of Africa’s most epic natural events — the Great Wildebeest Migration — and takes you deep into the three iconic Tanzanian destinations that form the beating heart of this timeless spectacle. Beginning in Arusha and progressing through the dramatic baobab country of Tarangire National Park, the boundless wilderness of the Serengeti, and the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro Crater, this itinerary has been crafted to place you at the centre of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacle at every stage.

The Serengeti National Park — a massive 14,500 square kilometre wilderness where every day brings a new landscape and a new adventure — is the migration’s stage, and you spend three days inside it. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area features one of the highest concentrations of game and the densest population of predators and carnivores in Africa: a self-contained world, descended into from the crater rim, teeming with 30,000 animals. And throughout, Wildflip Safaris’ expert guides ensure you are in the right place at the right time to witness what most people only ever see on screen.

With Wildflip Safaris, seven days becomes a complete, deeply immersive story — one told by lion roars, wildebeest thunder, sunrise balloon rides, and the extraordinary silence of the Ngorongoro Crater floor at midday.

Safari Highlights

Seven Days — Three Parks — One Extraordinary Story

Following the Migration

Three full days in the Serengeti place you inside the world's greatest wildlife spectacle — surrounded by wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle with their trailing predators during peak migration months.

Balloon Safari at Dawn

Float silently over the Serengeti at first light — watching wildlife move beneath you, rivers glinting in the rising sun, and the endless plains spreading to every horizon in a panorama beyond description.

Masai Kopjes Circuit

The Serengeti's iconic granite outcrops are miniature ecosystems — sheltering lions, enormous cobras, and a wealth of wildlife drawn to the water that pools in the rocks after rains.

Ngorongoro Full Day

A full day in the crater — not just a half-day — delivering the complete Ngorongoro experience: black rhino, lion prides, vast buffalo herds, and the shimmering soda lake with its flamingo colonies.

Tarangire Elephant Herds

Africa's largest elephant concentrations gather around the Tarangire River — enormous extended family groups of 50 to 100 individuals in a spectacle that defines the word abundance.

Sogore River Circuit

The Sogore River Circuit — looping through the plains south of the Seronera — is one of the Serengeti's finest drives for lion, Thomson's gazelle, topi, ostrich, and cheetah year-round.

Your 7-Day Itinerary

1
DAY ONE

Arusha → Tarangire National Park

Your safari begins with a meet and greet at the airport — your Wildflip Safaris driver and guide will be ready to welcome you with a warm Tanzanian greeting before a brief pre-departure orientation. Without delay, the adventure begins immediately as you head directly to Tarangire National Park — one of Tanzania's most rewarding and undersung parks, and the perfect opening chapter for a Migration Footsteps journey.

Tarangire runs along the line of the Tarangire River — a permanent water source in a seasonally dry landscape that acts as a magnet for every species in the ecosystem during Tanzania's dry season. The park's natural vegetation of Acacia woodland and giant African Baobab trees creates a dramatic and distinctive backdrop — the ancient baobabs, thousands of years old, rising from the red Rift Valley earth like living monuments to a landscape unchanged since the first humans walked here. Huge swamp areas in the south add another layer of ecological richness.

Tarangire is reputed to contain some of the largest elephant herds in Africa — enormous extended family groups that converge on the river in spectacular abundance. But the park holds rare treasures beyond elephants: the Greater Kudu with its magnificent spiral horns, the Fringed-eared Oryx — a species seldom seen in any other northern circuit park — and the charming Ashy Starling, endemic to central Tanzania and found in abundance here. A morning game drive on this first full safari day sets the tone for everything that follows.

DAY TWO

Tarangire → Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you depart directly for Serengeti National Park — the centrepiece of this Migration Footsteps journey and one of the great wildlife wildernesses of the world. The drive crosses the Rift Valley escarpment and enters the Serengeti ecosystem, where the landscape opens into the iconic boundless plains — vast savannah broken only by stands of acacia trees and the occasional rocky kopje rising from the grassland like a scattered giant's hand.

You arrive in the afternoon, and the remainder of the day is given over entirely to game viewing on these extraordinary plains. The timing of your visit determines which chapter of the Migration story you enter. During December, January, and February, the great herds are concentrated on the short-grass southern plains for the spectacular calving season. From June through September, the northern Serengeti and Mara River area delivers the famous and dramatic river crossings. In all seasons, the resident wildlife is extraordinary: giraffe, buffalo, and elephant roam year-round, while massive predator populations — lion, cheetah, and leopard — are reliably encountered throughout the park.

Your expert Wildflip guide will navigate the day's game circuits based on the most current intelligence from the guide network — positioning you for maximum wildlife encounter in the best possible light. By evening, the first day in the Serengeti will already have delivered moments you'll carry for life.

DAY THREE

Serengeti — Balloon Safari, Sogore Circuit & Masai Kopjes

Today delivers the Serengeti from every angle — above, at ground level, and from the heights of its ancient kopjes. For those who have chosen to add it, the day begins before dawn with one of Africa's most extraordinary experiences: a Hot Air Balloon safari over the Serengeti Plains. Floating silently above the awakening bush as the first light transforms the plains from grey to gold, watching wildlife move in their natural patterns far below — wildebeest streaming across a river crossing, lion prides returning from the night's hunt, elephants drifting through the acacia — is an experience that cannot be replicated from the ground. Available at supplementary cost by pre-arrangement.

After breakfast, the vehicle game drives begin with the celebrated Sogore River Circuit — a loop through the plains south of the Seronera River that represents one of the Serengeti's most consistently productive drives. This circuit is particularly renowned for lion sightings, as well as Thomson's gazelle, topi, ostrich, and the breathtaking speed of the cheetah on the open grass. Midday brings a relaxed picnic lunch at the Serengeti Visitor's Centre — a beautifully designed facility near the Seronera Lodge with excellent wildlife displays, a gift shop, cold drinks, and a fascinating information trail up and around a nearby kopje that provides genuine panoramic context for the ecosystem you are exploring.

The afternoon turns to the legendary Kopjes Circuit — navigating anti-clockwise around the Masai Kopjes, the Serengeti's famous volcanic granite outcrops. These extraordinary rock formations are miniature ecosystems in their own right: pools of water collect in the rock depressions after rain, drawing every species from lion to leopard; the shade of overhanging granite provides midday shelter; and the elevated vantage points allow predators — and their patient observers — to survey vast stretches of the surrounding plains. Lions particularly favour the kopjes in dry seasons, lying in wait for animals drawn to drink. Large rock pythons and formidably large cobras are also occasionally encountered on the rocky faces.

DAY FOUR

Serengeti Plains → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Today the safari adventure turns south. After a final morning drive in the Serengeti to make the most of the early-morning wildlife activity, you begin the 180 km, approximately 6-hour journey to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once considered among the Seven Wonders of the World, and that many who have seen it would still place in any such list without hesitation.

The drive south traverses the Serengeti's western approaches, climbing gradually through increasingly forested terrain as you gain altitude toward the crater highlands. The approach to Ngorongoro is announced by a dramatic shift in vegetation — the open savannah gives way to montane forest, the temperature drops noticeably, and the air carries the dampness of cloud forest. And then the rim road reveals the caldera: an almost impossibly vast natural amphitheatre, 20 kilometres across, its floor a distinct, self-contained ecosystem visible from the rim in a single sweeping panorama.

In the afternoon, you drive up to the Ngorongoro Crater rim for your first views over this extraordinary natural wonder. The crater floor, 600 metres below, is home to a permanent population of more than 30,000 animals — one of the highest concentrations of large mammals anywhere on earth. This is one of the only places in Africa where you stand a genuinely good chance of seeing the Big Five (lion, buffalo, rhino, elephant, and leopard) in a single day's drive. Tonight, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area surrounds you — its forests alive with primates, its rim echoing with the calls of resident birdlife.

DAY FIVE

Full Day Game Drive — Ngorongoro Crater

Today is the crown of the entire 7-day itinerary. After breakfast, you descend 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive on the crater floor — one of the most densely wildlife-populated areas anywhere on earth. The descent itself is a transition between worlds: the forest on the crater walls gives way to open grassland and soda lakes, and the scale of what you are entering — a complete, self-contained ecosystem within the walls of an ancient volcano — becomes gradually and wonderfully apparent.

The Ngorongoro Crater is home to an estimated 30,000 animals, supported by a year-round water supply and constant fodder. The diversity of species here is extraordinary. The vast, short-grass plains support enormous herds of wildebeest, zebra, and eland; warthog families trot through the grass with their tails raised like antennae; hippos wallow in pools along the crater's river; and giant African elephants — the bulls here are among the largest remaining anywhere — move with deliberate authority through the lakeside vegetation.

The predator population is equally staggering. The Ngorongoro supports one of Africa's highest densities of lions — multiple prides spread across the crater floor in established territories. Spotted hyenas are present in large clan numbers. Jackals work the edges of kills. Cheetah hunt the open grass. And somewhere on the crater floor — the encounter most coveted by any visitor — Tanzania's critically endangered black rhino, one of the continent's last viable populations, may be found grazing in the distant grasses. A picnic lunch on the crater floor, beside the shimmering soda lake with flamingos feeding in the shallows, completes a day of extraordinary wildlife immersion.

DAY SIX

Ngorongoro → Arusha — Last Night in Tanzania

After a final breakfast at the lodge — with the crater highlands surrounding you in the morning mist — you begin the drive back to Arusha for your last night in Tanzania. The return journey retraces the approach route through the conservation area, the crater highland forests, and the Rift Valley farmlands, each familiar landmark now carrying the accumulated weight of six extraordinary days.

The drive to Arusha takes approximately 3–4 hours, depending on road and traffic conditions, arriving in the early afternoon with time to rest, refresh, and reflect. Perhaps a final visit to Arusha's vibrant curio market — where Maasai artisans sell their work directly, and where the perfect last Tanzania memory can be found in a piece of beadwork or a carved figure — or simply a quiet afternoon at the lodge, sorting through photographs and beginning the process of understanding what these seven days have given you.

Tonight, a celebratory dinner at Moshono Hillside — where this journey effectively began. Your guide and driver, who have been your companions, educators, and fellow witnesses to seven days of extraordinary wildlife, will join you for a final evening toast to the safari just completed.

DAY SEVEN

Arusha → Kilimanjaro International Airport

The last morning of an extraordinary adventure. After a relaxed breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home. The 45-minute drive to the airport provides one final chance to absorb the Tanzanian landscape — the acacia-dotted plains, the distant silhouettes of mountain ranges, the daily rhythms of Tanzanian life along the roadside — before the journey home begins.

It has been an amazing trip — seven days of encounters that defy easy description and that most people spend a lifetime dreaming of. You leave Tanzania with an extraordinary collection of photographs, an even more extraordinary collection of memories — the Tarangire elephants at the river, the Serengeti balloon at dawn, the Masai Kopjes circuit with the lions lying in wait, the moment of descent into the Ngorongoro Crater — and stories that you will be sharing with family and friends for years to come. Tanzania has a way of staying with people. It will stay with you.

What Our Travellers Say

★★★★★

“Seven days following the migration footsteps was everything the name promises and more. Day 3 in the Serengeti — the balloon at dawn, then the Sogore River Circuit where we found three cheetahs within the first hour, then the Masai Kopjes with a pride of eleven lions at sunset — that single day could be a life’s finest safari. Wildflip’s guide read the Serengeti like a book. The Ngorongoro on Day 5 delivered the black rhino we had been hoping for. An absolutely extraordinary trip.”

David & Fiona — Australia· January 2026

★★★★★

“We chose the Premium Explorer tier and the private vehicle made the entire difference — we could stay with a cheetah kill for two hours without being moved on, and we never had to share a sighting with another vehicle. The Kongoni Tented Camp in the Serengeti was magnificent — breakfast with wildebeest grazing 50 metres from the table. And the full day in the Ngorongoro Crater — not just a half day, but a full day — gave us everything. We saw all five of the Big Five by midday. Wildflip are brilliant at what they do.”

Robert & Mei — Singapore· October 2025

★★★★★

“The Serengeti Visitor’s Centre picnic on Day 3 was a wonderful surprise — a beautifully designed facility with fascinating displays, great cold drinks, and the best shade acacia trees I’ve ever eaten lunch under. The kopje information trail that afternoon gave a completely different perspective on the ecosystem. But the moment of the whole trip was descending into the Ngorongoro Crater for the first time on Day 5 — looking out from the vehicle across 30,000 animals in that extraordinary enclosed world. Nothing prepares you for it.”
