This legendary 5-day safari takes you through the very heart of Tanzania’s world-famous northern circuit — three of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations in one seamlessly designed journey. Beginning in Arusha, you venture first into the ancient elephant kingdom of Tarangire National Park, then deep into the vast golden plains of the Serengeti, and finally descend into the magnificent volcanic bowl of the Ngorongoro Crater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the natural wonders of the world.

Each park offers a completely different character, terrain, and cast of wildlife — yet together they form the most complete safari experience Tanzania has to offer. Elephant herds moving beneath giant baobabs, wildebeest thundering across Serengeti grasslands, black rhino spotted from the crater rim — this is the Africa that lives in the imagination, made real. Your 5-Day Itinerary

DAY ONE

Arusha → Tarangire National Park

Your safari begins with a warm airport meet-and-greet in Arusha, where your expert Wildflip Safaris guide briefs you on the extraordinary journey ahead. From there, you head directly into the wild — your first destination: Tarangire National Park, a 2–3 hour drive from Arusha that takes you down onto the floor of the Great Rift Valley.

Tarangire is one of Tanzania's most underrated parks — and one of its most rewarding. The park's defining feature is its relationship with the Tarangire River, which runs through a landscape of low-lying hills, vast acacia woodland, and enormous ancient baobab trees that can be thousands of years old. During the dry season, the river and surrounding swamps act as a magnet for extraordinary concentrations of wildlife, making Tarangire one of the most reliably spectacular parks in East Africa.

The park is reputed to contain some of Africa's largest elephant herds — and you're likely to understand why within minutes of entering the gates. Tarangire is also one of the few places to spot three rare species: the Greater Kudu, with its spectacular spiral horns; the Fringed-eared Oryx; and the unique Ashy Starling. After a thrilling afternoon game drive, settle into camp as the sun dips below the baobabs.

DAY TWO

Tarangire → Serengeti National Park

After breakfast at camp, you depart Tarangire and begin the scenic overland journey to Serengeti National Park — Tanzania's most famous and beloved wilderness, a 14,500 km² expanse of open savannah that has become synonymous with the African safari experience.

Arriving in the afternoon, the Serengeti announces itself slowly — the land opens up, the acacia trees thin, and suddenly you are confronted with an almost incomprehensible vastness. The plains stretch to every horizon, broken only by occasional stands of flat-topped acacia and the dark outlines of ancient granite kopjes rising from the grassland like islands in a golden sea.

Your afternoon game drive explores this magnificent landscape. Depending on the season, you may drive through the spectacular wildebeest migration — vast herds numbering in the hundreds of thousands moving across the plains in their endless search for fresh grazing. There are always resident animals: giraffe browsing the acacia canopies, buffalo in their hundreds, elephant families drifting across the open ground, and large predators — lion, cheetah and leopard — patrolling their territories in the golden late-afternoon light.

DAY THREE

Full Day – Serengeti Plains

A full day in the Serengeti is a privilege that few travellers fully anticipate until they're living it. The day begins with an optional once-in-a-lifetime experience — a Hot Air Balloon Safari over the Serengeti Plains (available at supplementary cost by pre-arrangement). Floating silently above the awakening bush at first light, with wildlife moving far below and the vast landscape glowing in the early morning gold, is a perspective on Africa that no game drive can replicate.

After breakfast, your guide leads you on a morning game drive along the famous Sogore River Circuit — a loop into the plains south of the Seronera River that is consistently productive for lions, Thomson's gazelle, topi, ostrich and cheetah. On the way, you'll visit the Serengeti Visitor's Centre near Seronera Lodge — a beautifully designed facility with fascinating wildlife displays, maps, a gift shop, and a picnic area beneath giant acacia trees. A relaxed picnic lunch in the shade here, after a morning among some of the world's most spectacular wildlife, is a memory in itself.

The afternoon follows the celebrated Kopjes Circuit, winding anti-clockwise around the Masai Kopjes — ancient weathered granite outcrops scattered across the plains that function as miniature ecosystems. These rocky islands collect rainwater in natural pools and provide shade, making them magnets for wildlife in the dry season. Lions are almost always present here, often lying in ambush near drinking spots, along with formidably large cobras that share the rocks. Each kopje is a world unto itself — and your guide will know exactly where to look.

DAY FOUR

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater

Today the safari adventure turns south toward one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on earth. After a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, you head toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, approximately 180 km and 6 hours from the Serengeti.

The journey itself is spectacular, taking you through the Serengeti's southern reaches and up onto the Crater Highlands — a dramatic highland plateau that rises above the surrounding plains and offers sweeping panoramic views over the Conservation Area's vast landscape. You'll pause at the crater rim for your first breathtaking view into the caldera below — a perfect circle of wilderness 260 km² in size, its floor alive with movement even from this height.

You descend 600 metres into this magnificent crater for a half-day game drive on the floor — entering a completely self-contained world teeming with life. The Ngorongoro Crater holds an estimated 30,000 large animals within its walls, including some of Tanzania's last remaining black rhino. The permanent water supply and rich year-round fodder supports wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and giant elephants — while the predator density is arguably the highest in Africa: lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard all share this extraordinary arena. A picnic lunch on the crater floor completes one of the most memorable days in African wildlife travel.

DAY FIVE

Ngorongoro → Arusha → Departure

The final morning of your safari arrives with a last extraordinary sunrise over the Ngorongoro highlands — the kind of morning that brings everything into perspective. After a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, your guide transfers you back to Arusha, arriving in time for your onward flight.

The drive back is unhurried — a chance to absorb the landscapes you've passed through, to look through your photographs, to relive the moments that surprised you most. The Tarangire elephants moving beneath the baobabs. The Serengeti lions watching from the kopje rocks. The first view of the crater from the rim, and everything living inside it. These are the memories that stay. Not just for days or months — but for a lifetime.

Five days is the perfect duration for Tanzania's northern circuit. Long enough to settle into each place, to move through the parks at a pace that allows genuine connection with the wildlife — not just a checklist of sightings. You'll leave Arusha with more than photographs. You'll leave with a feeling you did not know was possible. And you will almost certainly already be planning your return.

What Our Northern Circuit Travellers Say

★★★★★

“Five days felt like exactly the right amount of time. Tarangire blew us away before we even reached the Serengeti — elephant herds literally surrounding our vehicle under baobab trees. Then the Serengeti just kept delivering — we had three lion sightings in one afternoon. The Ngorongoro Crater was the perfect finale. Wildflip’s guide was superb from start to finish.”

Emma & James — United Kingdom· April 2026

★★★★★

“We did the Premium Explorer tier and it was absolutely the right decision. The private vehicle changed everything — complete flexibility, no rushing, no compromise. We watched a cheetah hunt on the Sogore Circuit for nearly an hour. The balloon sunrise over the Serengeti the next morning was perhaps the single greatest experience of my life. Flawlessly organised by Wildflip.”

Lars F. — Sweden· March 2026

★★★★★

“I came for the migration and I wasn’t disappointed — but what surprised me was how much I loved Tarangire. Nobody told me it would be that extraordinary. The Greater Kudu sighting alone was worth the flight to Tanzania. Add the Ngorongoro Crater and the rhino we spotted at dusk, and this was the trip of a lifetime. Already talking about coming back for the southern circuit.”
