After transfer from Arusha to Rongai Gate on the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, your journey begins in an atmosphere utterly unlike the busier southern approaches. The village of Nale Moru surrounds the gate — small farms, quiet roads, and the smell of earth and vegetation — before the trail leads you into a world of pine forest planted in the lower mountain zones during Tanzania's colonial era.
The initial terrain is gentle and forgiving — farmland giving way to forest, the trail rising steadily but without intimidation. The northern forest is different from the rainforest of the southern routes: lighter, more open, the trees spaced with a quality of quiet that immediately establishes the Rongai Route's most distinctive character. After approximately 6km and 3–4 hours, you arrive at Simba Camp — your first night on the mountain, with the Kenyan plains stretching in a remarkable panorama behind you and the great dome of Kibo ahead.
