Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Marangu Gate (1,860m), the official starting point of the route. After registration formalities and a thorough briefing from your lead guide, your team — including assistant guides, porters, and cook — are introduced and the trek begins through one of Kilimanjaro's most beautiful environments: the dense montane rainforest.
The trail winds upward through a cathedral of towering trees draped in moss and ferns, alive with birdsong and the occasional glimpse of Kilimanjaro's elusive wildlife, including blue monkeys and colourful sunbirds. After approximately 8km and 3–4 hours of hiking, you arrive at Mandara Huts, a charming cluster of A-frame cabins set in a forest clearing at 2,720m.
Settle in, enjoy a hot lunch, and if energy allows, take a short optional walk (45 mins round-trip) to the picturesque Maundi Crater on the forest edge. Dinner is served at the hut mess hall as your body begins to acclimatise.
